Hästens began in 1852 as Pehr Adolf Janson's saddlery in Sweden, turned to beds from 1917, and has been purveyor to the Swedish Royal Court since 1952. The Blue Check came in 1978, the Grand Vividus in 2020. The company is still family-owned and makes its beds in Köping.

Every year with its source. Where sources contradict each other, we say so.
Pehr Adolf Janson starts out as a saddler. Horsehair goes not only into saddles but into carriage cushions and mattresses — the material the brand still rests on.

The horse logo appears and the company turns to beds. The car makes saddles redundant; the horsehair stays.

Hästens' blue and white check has existed since 1978. It was designed within the family — usually attributed to Jack Ryde, the fourth generation — as a break from the browns, greens and oranges of the seventies, and was first shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, on the 2000T. It has since become the most recognisable brand mark in the bed world.
Hästens has been purveyor to the Swedish Royal Court since 1952, and is still on that list today. It is an honorary title the King grants to companies whose products the court has bought and appreciated over a number of years. It says something about trust and continuity, not about a technical test: a royal warrant is not a quality mark.
Canadian designer Ferris Rafauli, known for Drake's house in Toronto, designed two beds with Hästens: the Grand Vividus (2020), the most expensive bed the brand makes, and the drēmər (2022), released for its 170th anniversary. The first is an object that drew a waiting list; the second brings the same design language to the permanent collection.
The Grand Vividus is the most expensive bed in the world you can order: a set of mattress, base and headboard, designed with Ferris Rafauli and built by hand in Köping over more than six hundred hours. Introduced in 2020, first bought by Drake. According to the 2026 European list price, it costs € 686,990 in every size up to 210 by 210 cm. At SleepSpa you can lie on it by special request, alongside the 2000T and the drēmər in the fixed suites.
